Chasing Winter Sun in Lisbon: A Sunny Escape with My Better Half
5 February 2024Something that I have started doing in my spare time has been coding or at the very least learning to code. I started small with YouTube courses refreshing my knowledge of HTML and CSS, then I started looking at more advanced CSS which was very interesting and pretty haha.
Then… I found JavaScript and what I thought I knew about coding, I realised I knew nothing about coding. I knew nothing about programming. It felt like a massive step back, I kind of felt a little like a failure, and this was VERY early in this VERY long course. It was completely overwhelming to me, nothing I did worked. I decided to stop, take a moment and figure this out, I watched a freecodecamp YouTube (I cannot recommend it enough and have linked it – she beastly – running at nearly 3 and a half hours) This course completely changed the game for me. I was now running lines of code and seeing them work, I was understanding the jargon that the first course didn’t seem to bother with – I am not sure if they expected you to be further along than I was OR if I disliked the way the person taught the lesson.
One thing I would say to anyone who wants to learn programming and take it seriously is that you have to do things all the time, and be constantly learning and coding all the time. Else you forget it. I know my wife says it is the same with regards to Excel (her platform of choice for her job) if you don’t continuously do or use then you will forget.
I am still on my programming journey and I have no idea where it will take me, I hope to start coding apps and potentially start looking at coding my games or mods – let’s go Stardew mods! One certain thing is that I need to make sure that I am much more active with it, set a schedule or start a routine and stick to it in the long term.
Here is hoping I will be able to give you an update soon.
