28 May 2024Another year, another cricket world cup, at least it is maybe starting to feel that way to some people – I am not one of those people. I could have a cricket World Cup every year, I say bring on the T20 Cricket World Cup 2024! I would say that in terms of betting odds (on Paddy Power), South Africa are sitting 4th most likely to win… oh and how every World Cup hurts me.
Currently, the leading odds are on India to win – which is normally a very good bet although I will say that this Australia team scare me to death, they have some of the most aggressive batsmen I have seen in a long time with Travis Head opening the batting and currently in the form of his life in the IPL, I am surprised that Jake Fraser-McGurk didn’t make the team. India though, have possibly the best T20 bowler in the world in Bumrah. Looking at the team, the guys on the reserve list walk into any other team. So that is scary for everyone else. The next favourites after India and Australia are England, now they are still a formidable team, but they no longer scare me like they used to, their bowling lineup could work, but you are putting a lot on a guy who has not played for England since March 2023 (being Archer). Solid batting line up though, Philip Salt is playing out of his skin at the IPL.
With the South African team, I am optimistically cautious and yet again using the IPL as my marker, I am concerned about De Kock, Nortje, Jansen and Markram being only picked occasionally for their teams. Stubbs and Klaasen are giving me massive batting hopes and Rabada is doing Rabada things. I think our reserves may play a part if the front-line bowlers don’t make an impact or if the wickets are doing different things, then one of the reserves (Ngidi) will be VERY valuable with his variation bowling.
Let me just be honest and say… I am nervous about The T20 Cricket World Cup, but then I am nervous EVERY world cup.
